My standard wire dachshund is gagging and has up thick

Customer Question
My standard wire dachshund...

My standard wire dachshund is gagging and has spit up thick mucous. He is breathing heavily but resting now.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Coughing can be worrying. The Expert will know what you should do. What is the dog's name and age?

Magnum 8-1/2 years

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Magnum?

He's a terrible chewer...he has had stomach surgery 2 years ago for chewing nylon webbing. I was out today for 4 hours or so but he had indoor kennel and able to be outside as well. My other dachshund and border terrier are fine.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on magnjm, please?

Regretfully, gagging and expectorating mucus can indicate a simple upper respiratory infection such as the infectious tracheobronchitis complex but also any number of more serious cardiopulmonary disorders. Please check his vitals for me...

1) Check his gum and tongue color. They should be nicely pink - not whitish (anemia) or bluish/greyish (cyanosis/hypoxia/lack of oxygen to his tissues).
2) Check his respiratory rate at rest. He should be taking less than 30 breaths/minute while asleep or at rest.
3) Take his rectal temperature. Any body thermometer will do when placed 1.5" into his rectum for 1 minute. Normal is 100.5-102.5F. This is a two person job!
Please let me know what you find.

His gums are pink. His breathing is approximately 30 minute. It’s just me so am not going to take his temperature. His breathing just still seems more labored than normal
Dog Specialist: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Thank you for checking. His labored breathing is important for you to have recognized. I wouldn't hesitate to have his vet auscultate (listen to) and X-ray Magnum's thorax (chest) particularly if a heart murmur had been heard in previous physical exams. Please continue on in our conversation if you wish.

He slept through the night after several spells of coughing and spitting up mucus twice. He did have a little blood in stringy mucus
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
I do plan to take him to Vet this morning

Now you really have me worried. Hemoptysis - coughing up blood - can indicate an anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning; congestive heart failure; neoplasia in the lungfields; bacterial, fungal, or parasitic pneumonia; heart worm disease; lung lobe torsion; and rarer coagulopathies (clotting defects). I'm pleased to hear that he'll be attended to shortly.
