Customer Question
7 years old male...

7 years old male English mastiff leaking urine. He's on 3 pills of propin 2x a day since May. Looking for other options side it hasn't helped much

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is wrong with the dog?

He had a couple idiopathic seizures in January and again in march. He's been in good health since. He started leaking after the seizures.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. What is the dog's name?

Koda. I've had a cat scan and blood work done Which shows he's healthy as can be. I don't like giving him meds that's aren't working .

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Koda?

I believe that's all. The large amounts of leaking is the concern. It's not just when he sleeps. It is all the time.

Hi JaCustomer,

Welcome to Just Answer. My name is Jane. I have been involved professionally with dogs in the healthcare and behavioral fields for over 20 years. I’ve worked as a Vet Assistant and Behaviorist and have extensive experience in dog reproduction, as a breeder, for even longer than that.. Canine behavioral issues and training are also my specialties. It will be my pleasure to work with you today. I'm so sorry that no other expert answered your question earlier. Your question just showed up on the list of unanswered questions that I have access to and I wanted to help. I hope you will rate my answer rather than the delay.

The first thing to check is for a medical issue such as a urinary tract infection. Before anything else can be considered, medical causes for inconinence need to be ruled out. I know your vet likely did check back in may but it wouldn't be a bad idea to check again. If the proin is not working, the dosage of proin might need adjusting, but your vet would need to evaluate that and advise you on a new dosage. REad about phenylpropanolamine here:

http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/prescription/phenylpropanolamineAnother treatment would be hormone replacement medication such as testosterone. It is not as effective as DES treatment for female dogs. You can read about incontinence here:

http://veterinarycalendar.dvm360.com/treatment-refractory-urinary-incontinence-proceedings?id=&sk=&date=&&pageID=1

.

Some other medications might include Imipramine, and Deslorelin if others don't achieve results.

http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/prescription/imipramine-tofranil

.http://www.ivis.org/proceedings/iscfr/2012/62.pdf?LA=1

A specialist in veterinary surgery could perform surgical procedures such as colposuspension, cystourethropexy and prosthetic sphincter implantation which may solve the problem and eliminate the need for any medication. There are other causes of incontinence as well that would not respond to normal treatment for incontinence. In those cases, a referral to a neurologist would be helpful so he could be evaluated for other causes.

I hope I've given you great service. If so, I'd appreciate a 5 star rating. The rating should be based on my answer and not any site issue. Experts are not compensated until a rating is done. If you have any other questions at all, please reply here and I'll be happy to follow up with you even after you have rated. .
