Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

How long has she been showing signs?

Any retching, gagging, lip licking, drooling, or vomiting?

Anything caught in her mouth?

Are her gums pink or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

Any redness, discharge, or discomfort with her ears?

Could she have eaten anything harmful (ie bones, toys, plants, chemicals, human meds, etc)?

She had only been showing those symptoms for about an hour. She was also constantly licking her lips. Before that he jaw was jittering when she was yawning and that was going on all day.

I checked her gums and ears they seemed fine. I don't think she has eaten anything she shouldn't. My partner did spay surface spray around outside the day before. She could have eaten a bug that had been sprayed. We put her to sleep in our room last night so we could keep an eye on her. She seemed fine through the night

Hello again,

Now when we see these kinds of behaviour, we do have a few concerns. The head shaking can be seen with ear issues but alongside lip licking suggests she has licked something that irritated her mouth and potentially her stomach as well. So, if he did spray something I would question if she licked it. Now its good to hear that she was fine overnight but if you see any more signs, we can try some supportive care. To start, do make sure to flush her mouth with cool water to remove any chemical residue. At that time, do check she has no blisters/ulcers or anything caught in the roof of her mouth.

After, we can counter nausea with this by treating her with a OTC pet safe antacid. [ie Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid), Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac), Tagamet (More Info/Dose Here @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/cimetidine-hcl-tagamet)]. Whichever you choose, we’d give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption. Of course, do double check with your vet if she has a known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned.

Afterwards, you can consider starting her on an easily digestible diet for a few days. Options we often use are cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). The aim of these diets is that they will be better tolerated/absorbed by the compromised gut. Therefore, it should get more nutrients in and result in less GI upset. As long as improvement is being seen, I usually advise continuing this until the signs are settled, and then weaning her slowly back to her normal diet.

Overall, given Sky's signs this sounds like oral irritation and nausea from something she has been in contact with. Therefore, we'd want to check for changes in her mouth (in her ears too just since that can cause the head shaking) and try the above. Of course, if she doesn’t respond to the above within 12-24 hours; then we'd want to get her vet involved. They can assess her and treat her with injectable anti-nausea medication +/- anti-inflammatories if needed to get her comfy.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.

Hello,Thanks for you time in answering my question. I ended up taking Sky to see the vet and she had swallon glands. The vet gave her a shot of anti-biotics and a shot of anti-inflamitery. She's now on anti-biotics and anti-inflamitery tablets. The vet thinks that she has caught a virus.
