Weeks post acepromazine dose to get my dog's nails trimmed at vet, my dog, a 13 year old chow/possibly Aussie cross

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name?

Sister

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Sister?

Sister seems far more aged post ace dose. Droopy eyes, less responsive to being called in or to go out. Was found as an emaciated pup at 8 weeks and has never missed a meal. She now leaves a small amount of food in her bowl and even hesitates to approach her bowl. That has NEVER happened before. She also has a 1/8" diameter tumor on her head that has been there for a few years. The ace dose was given 2 months ago.

Hi. I’m Dr. Denise, a licensed veterinarian. Welcome to JustAnswer! I’d like to help with your concerns regarding Sister.

I share your concerns for her declining condition and decreased appetite.

Give that the Acepromazine dose was given 2 months ago, it is very unlikely that this has any correlation to her current condition.

Ask Your Own Dog Question

In response to your question, lethargy and decrease appetite are very non-specific symptoms and can be related to many different medical conditions that affect dogs. Unfortunately, in this case, Sister, will need a hands on examination by your family veterinarian, blood work (chemistry profile & CBC) as an initial screening test to determine the exact underlying cause. Treatment will be based on exam and test results.

Thank you. I will indeed make an appointment with my vet.Followup concern since I cannot see the vet until next week: I'm concerned about a possible MDR1 mutation which is prevalent in Aussies. Sister has not been tested for that. Do her symptoms suggest a reaction to ace/MDR1 mutation? And is there any treatment related to ace/MDR1 from which Sister may benefit at this point?
Thank you.

Typically, the symptoms of a toxicity from a MDR1 mutation include neurologic symptoms like tremors, disorientation and blindness and these symptoms occur very quickly after exposure and not over the course of several weeks.

The Acepromazine would have washed from her system over several hours, and at most 24hrs. There is no treatment I can recommend at this time other then supportive care under she can have diagnostic testing.
