My dog is 13...

My dog is 13. He’s excessively drinking and peeing. And has just started shivering. He’s a black lab mix. Last week he got blood work. No love for kidney failure, glucose level fine, but low potassium

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Problems with drinking can be serious. I'm glad you noticed it. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name?

Danny

Hello, JACustomer. I have been a Veterinary Nurse for over 15 years and would be happy to help you today. I'm reviewing your question right now.

Ask Your Own Dog Question

Can you share results of the bloodwork?

Was a urinalysis performed?

Did I understand correctly that they did not see signs of kidney failure?

Ask Your Own Dog Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Correct. Let me see if I have the results here. Give me one minute. But yes, a urinalysis was performed. And just showed signs of a dog that drank too much (docs words)
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I have them
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
What would you like from the test results?
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Nevermind. I am mistaken. This isnt them. I do not have them.
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I just have what they told me. That kidney and liver values were normal. And that he had low potassium.

Seeing a copy would help as I would know what they ran. Do you have a copy of your receipt, by chance? And detailed line items?

Thank you. Did your vet discuss running any additional tests such as Dex suppression tests? ACTH stim test? ultrasound of the abdomen?

She put him on 550mg of potassium 2 times a day for a week. We bring him back Monday to have the potassium checked. Otherwise, she didn’t say any other tests. And was concerned it might be hyperaldosteronism
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
She wasn’t sure what was going on. Was consider8mg talking to an internist. So I’m up for giving her ideas
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
She said she doesn’t think it’s Cushings based on the tests. I was thinking Addison’s?

An internist would be wise. If your vet suspects hyperaldonsteronism, additional testing such as aldosterone and renin levels, abdominal ultrasound, ACTH stim test and such may be very useful in diagnosing what is going on. Honestly, Danny doesn't fit Cushing's, Addison's or hyperaldonsteronism well. He fits the criteria of all three ailments in a few different departments but no one of these ailments stands out more than the other. I believe additional diagnostics are going to be needed. This may take place now or in the near future based on how your companion responds to the potassium supplementation.

Ok. Seems like you’re at the same loss she is :(

That's correct and primarily because the bloodwork is "normal" where it should be abnormal and vise versa for the conditions we've discussed. It's not uncommon for additional diagnostics to be needed for this conditions, in fact, especially when baseline chemistry, CBC, electrolytes and thyroid panel are all relatively normal despite the pet not behaving normally at all. Sometimes we do see owners picking up on subtle changes in a dog's behavior before the bloodwork becomes abnormal and that could certainly be the case here if you're close with Danny.
