Customer Question
Hi my dog is...

Hi my dog is very gassy and isn't eating much, he keeps putting his butt in the air (downward dog yoga pose) and seems slightly lethargic. He gets excited when I meantjon treats, however will not eat them; which is rare! His gas is very loud I can hear it from 5 steps away

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help Very Gassy. How old is Very Gassy?

His name is ***** ***** is 9 years old

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Chewy?

He's very active and is a city dog. He goes for walks downtown San Francisco and I'm afraid he ate something he should've

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Chewy, please?

How long has this behavior been noticed, please? There's evidence of gastrointestinal distress but the cause of that distress isn't clear at this time.

Chewy is still lethargic this morning, he threw up twice last night and had diarrhea this morning.
Dog Specialist: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 11 months ago

Thank you for the additional information. If his distress has persisted for more than 72 hours, it would be prudent to have his vet attend to him. A simple dietary indiscretion might go into remission within 72 hours unaided but once that time period passes and my patient is still symptomatic I need to consider more dire causes of such distress such as pancreatitis and hepatitis. I would expect his vet to want to perform a thorough physical exam including diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests +/- imaging in the form of abdominal ultrasound. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

It started last night around 5... I will be observant for the next few hours and take him to the vet if he doesn't feel better by tonight. Is there any foods you might recommend I try feeding him?
Dog Specialist: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 11 months ago

I would prefer that he be fasted for 24 hours in order to rest his GI tract. At the end of his fast (5 PM tonight), his regular food can be offered. I don't abruptly alter the diet unless I'm dealing with a more chronic GI disorder as altering the diet itself can cause GI distress in our pets. Never restrict water, however. If drinking induces vomiting, you can replace his water with ice cubes for him to lick.
