Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner, but can you tell me:

Is he still hospitalized and on IV fluids?

What other treatments did they start?

Since you only wrote a history without a question, did you have a specific query about Joker's situation?

Sorry 9/20/17 metronidazole 250, cerenia inj, canine GI low fat 13.5oz, on 9/21/17 cerena inj, cerenia tab 60mg 4pack, cephalexin 500mg, parvo witness test. I'm sorry to have wasted your time but he won't eat or drink at all and he is taking shallow short breathes don't think he will make it too much longer
Dog Specialist: Dr. B., Veterinarian replied 10 months ago

Hello again,

That was no worry, I just wanted to make sure I was on the same page with you. Though that is very worrisome if he is starting to show breathing changes. If he is breathing either > 30 breaths per minute or less than 20 or has pale/white gums; then we would want him back to the vet urgently for stabilization. And if we can do so, easing his breathing may be all we need to do to get him eating. Else they could use a stronger option then the Cerenia +/- add in an appetite stimulant. And if we did that and still struggled to get him eating then we can offer or syringe feed watered down canned food, Hill's A/D, Royal Canin Recovery, or Clinicare Canine/Feline Liquid Diet. All of these are critical care diets that are calorically dense, so a little goes a long way nutrition-wise. (and in a pinch we can even try boosting his blood sugar by rubbing a sugary syrup (ie glucose syrup, honey, karo syrup, pancake syrup, or even non-grape jam) onto the gums). But overall a change to breathing is a real worry and often they are so focused on breathing they cannot eat. So, we may need him back right away to give him a chance.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
