She is panting non-stop and has gone outside way more than usual. She also seems very thirsty

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Problems with drinking can be serious. I'm glad you noticed it. The Expert will know what to do. What is the dog's name and age?

Sadie she's 8

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Sadie?

This is very unusual for her. She is usually ready for bed at 10 and doesn't get up much till 6

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

How long has she had these signs?

Is she passing more urine? Large or small volumes? Any straining?

Any issues passing stool?

Are her gums pink or pale/white?

If you press on her belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain?

Can you take a breathing rate for me (just count her breaths for 10 seconds + multiply by 6)?

She has been waking me up to urinate several times tonight. Her gums are pink. Rate is 120 to 180. Her belly feels tight to me But she doesn't whine or move away when I touch it.
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
She also threw up part of her dinner.

It all just started this evening. She urinated twice in about 5 minutes just now. She had no issue passing stool

Hello again,

Now we do need to tread with care here.

Her signs are a bit non-specific, but I do suspect the panting is just agitation since she has good gum color/perfusion. Though to see her urinating more often would mean we need to consider bacterial cystitis but with the vomiting issues like bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, parasites/protozoa infections, and dietary indiscretion would be a concern. And some dogs will drink more with any of those but at Sadie's age we also have organ issues and metabolic disease to keep in the back of our minds.

With those considerations, we can start some symptomatic treatment for Sadie. To start, for her nausea, we can give an OTC pet safe antacid. [ie Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid), Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac), Tagamet (More Info/Dose Here @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/cimetidine-hcl-tagamet)]. Whichever you choose, we’d give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption. Of course, do double check with your vet if she has a known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned. Though if you give this and she cannot keep it down due to nausea that is usually a red flag that we need to bypass her mouth with injectable anti-vomiting medication from her vet.

Afterwards, you can consider starting her on an easily digestible diet like cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). The aim of these diets is that they will be better tolerated/absorbed by the compromised gut. Therefore, it should get more nutrients in and result in less GI upset. As well, do keep an eye on that thirst, but we'd hope that if we can soothe her gut it will reduce.

Overall, her signs do raise a few concerns here. Therefore, we’d want to start supportive care to settle her stomach. If she cannot keep that or water down at any point, appears dehydrated already, or doesn’t respond to the above within 12-24 hours; then we'd want to get her vet involved. They can assess her hydration, rule out fever, make sure there is nothing in her stomach that shouldn't be there or any sinister viruses present. Depending on their findings, her vet can treat her with injectable anti-nausea medication +/- antibiotics to address this for her and get her settled.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
