Customer Question
She is lethargic and...

She is lethargic and doesn't want to move. She is responsive., but I worry because she hasn't gone out to urinate today. She is a husky. 5 yrs old

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Veterinarian will know how to help the dog. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

When she was walking yesterday, she was doing it gingerly.

At her age, the most common causes of a generalized decrease in mobility would be infectious, typically tick borne. It does depend on what region of the US you are in. In New England, we commonly see dogs with this presentation who have Lyme disease. If you are in an area with a heavy tick population, then she needs to be tested.

So, there are a few things you can do today, to determine if she needs to go to an emergency veterinary hospital.

-Check her gums and make sure they are pink and moist. If they look pale or are very dry then that is a red flag.

-Check her rectal temperature with a digital thermometer. A normal temperature is 99-102.9. If her temp is 104 or higher, then she needs to be seen today if possible.

-Check her legs for any areas of pain or swelling. Check her belly to make sure it is not distended. If she has any swollen joints or her abdomen appears to be swollen or painful, then she needs to be seen.

It is not uncommon for a dog that is painful to not go out to urinate. If you do not have a local veterinarian who can see her today, then I can help you find a local emergency clinic. Just post your city and state. Please ask any follow up questions. Take care.
