JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Coughing can be worrying. The Veterinarian will know what you should do. What is the dog's name?
Customer: Spencer
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Spencer?
Customer: Hasn't been eating well for 3 or 4 days. German short haired pointer. 7 years old. Almost completely listless. Breathing issues like a weird cough, hacking, and trouble barking. One nostril is drier and bumpy. Normally this dog is quite active and alert.

Hello, JACustomer. I have been a Veterinary Nurse for over 15 years and would be happy to help you today. I'm reviewing your question right now.

1) Can you share pictures of the eyes and nose?
2) Has he been examined?
3) Is he on any meds at this time?
4) Can you also share video of the coughing?

If not, the coughing that you're hearing, does it look and sound like any of these?

Cardiac cough:

Kennel cough:

Collapsing trachea:

Reverse sneezing:

Laryngeal paralysis: http://

Hi there. Here's a video of Spencer. He doesn't cough often, so no video of that. It sounds like the kennel cough in the video. I also have a picture if you'd like. He was better for a day, but now is not feeling or looking too good as you'll see in the video. He's still not eating like usual.

JACustomer, I think you've reached the point that Spencer needs medical care. My general impression of him is that is he definitely ill and needs to have some diagnostics performed to determine the cause of the symptoms. The coughing itself is certainly a concern but the appearance of his eyes are greatly concerning to me. I would recommend that you permit your veterinarian to start with blood work and possibly some x-rays. At 7 years of age, the symptoms may also warrant a referral for MRI/CT scan if your get feels the symptoms may be due to a tumor or growth such as in the middle ear, the brain, etc.
