I think my dog is experiencing pain--panting and whimpering

Customer Question

I think my dog is experiencing pain--panting and whimpering for 30 minutes now, wondering if I should take him to a veterinary hospital...I gave him a baby aspirin, 5 minutes ago. Poor guy; I think we have been misdiagnosing what looked like anxiety, and it has probably been pain.
JA: Is the dog in any pain? Is it behaving differently?
Customer: Whatever it is, it is getting worse. Worse at night (for me too, since he wakes up. I am guessing it is pain. Usually I haven't seen him go on this long at this time of night.
JA: Have there been any changes in the dog's appearance or diet?
Customer: He's lost about 4 pounds the last year, but the vet thought that was good. He was put on different food that he seems to tolerate well, though his appetite varies, and sometimes he'll only eat if I hand feed him.
JA: Poor your dog. Could be dental problems. The veterinarian will know what to do.
Customer: Not dental problems; been checked out for this already.
JA: Is there anything else you think the vet should know?
Customer: Occasional sharp yelp when he gets up from sleep. 13 years old, arthritis maybe?
