My 3 month old golden puppy seems to have dark "circles"

Customer Question

My 3 month old golden puppy seems to have dark "circles" under his eyes - this is new. He has been treated for giardia twice and needs a retest next week. Any thoughts about the dark under the eyes?

Dehydration and subsequent thinning of the skin under his eyes makes the venous (poorly oxygenated) vascular supply in that area more apparent. Oxygenated blood appears red; poorly oxygenated blood appears bluish/greyish. I would be concerned that your puppy has lost fluid volume due to diarrhea in association with his Giardia. This should be a transient effect and disappear once he normalizes post-effective Giardia treatment (fenbendazole +/- metronidazole for 7 consecutive days). Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
