My dog is an 8 year old yorkie malteese who had her anal

Customer Question

My dog is an 8 year old yorkie malteese who had her anal glands expressed last Saturday. She has been skutting ever since. Today I have noticed that her rectum/ anus looks black. On closer inspection it looks like black stripes, I don't remember her having them before. There is no discharge or visible sores
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name?
Customer: Bijoux
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Bijoux?
Customer: She is being treated since last Saturday for UTI with Clavamox 125 mg q 12

I'm sorry to hear of this with Bijoux. There aren't any medical conditions that blacken the anus and so I expect that those black stripes indicate soilage most likely due to anal gland exudate. You can test that hypothesis by gently cleansing her anus with mineral oil (not mineral spirits). We've recognized that anal glands are being expressed too often. Dogs that scoot may have anal gland impaction/infection but most commonly suffer from an anusitis as part of a more general allergic dermatitis. These dogs will benefit from the application of an over the counter hydrocortisone cream to their anus thrice daily.
