My 3 year old black lab has not been filling well few days.

Customer Question

My 3 year old black lab has not been filling well for e few days. I just decided to check his gums, which I haven't done for quite a while. They are very black. But his eyelids are pink He played very hard today on our daily walk. The black gums have me worried about his heart. But maybe it's Normal in black labs?

Hi this is Dr. Gabby. The black color of the gums, as well as black spots on the tongue, are just pigment just like freckles. The black color does not indicate heart disease or anemia. Heart disease may cause pale or purple gums as the tissue is not being oxygenated very well.

If the black spots had a raised irregular surface then it could be a mass or tumor growing. But if it is just flat and black that is just pigment.

It is common in labs and retrievers.

Does that help? Do you have any additional questions?
