My dog has had sudden weakness to nd legs and arching her

Customer Question

My dog has had sudden weakness to hind legs and arching her back with ataxia.i have taken her to the vet and they say that her reflexes are normal, but a little sluggish. She has also had a full set of bloods done which are all normal! This was sudden onset after a walk where she always chases her ball! I'm concerned it's a disc problem with her back! Also on examination she doesn't have any tender areas only on palpating of her abdomen but no yelping! She is a 5 yr 9montj old 6.95 kg Boston terrier! Do you have any suggestions?

I am sorry to hear you are worried about Sophie. My name is Rebecca. I will do my best to help. I am a veterinarian with 30 years experience.

I agree with you that this could be a problem in the back, such as a bulging disc or pinched nerve. Since her reflexes were sluggish, that might also indicate a neurologic/back problem. Were any Xrays taken?

In addition to rest and pain medication, I might also try prescription anti inflammatory medication (carprofen, deracoxib, meloxicam) and possibly muscle relaxants (methocarbamol). A consult with a neurologist if she is not getting a better and if Xrays were normal would be my next step, if she were my own dog and these medications were not helping.

The weak legs, arched back and sluggish reflexes all indicate a possible disc/back problem. She may need more than just pain medication.
