Our 12 year old shihtzu started shivering early this

Customer Question

Our 12 year old shihtzu started shivering early this morning, we sleep during the day, because we work nights. I put her in bed with us this morning, she wouldn't jump up on her own. During the day, she urinated on the bed, didn't even move. I picked her up and cleaned her and moved her to her bed in the livingroom, she will not walk, eat or drink. She is no longer shivering, but very lethargic. Our vet is not available until tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear of this with your Shihtzu, Debbie. You've described quite an ill dog but although her symptoms are important, they're not pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one disorder. Please check her vital signs for me so I can better assess the urgency in having her seen promptly...

1) Please check her gum and tongue color. They should be nicely pink - not whitish (anemia) nor bluish/greyish (hypoxia/lack of oxygen to her tissues)

2) Please check her respiratory rate at rest. She should be taking less than 40 breaths/minute.

3) Please take her rectal temperature. Any body thermometer will do placed 1.5" into her rectum for 1 minute. Normal is 100.5-102.5F. This is a two person job!

Does she have a medical history that might help tell me why she's currently so ill?
