Any respiratory rate exceeding 40 breaths per minute is worrisome if it persists; in other words, if it isn't directly related to exercise and abates shortly after that exercise. I consider pain, anxiety, and cardiopulmonary disorders when a dog's rate is as rapid as Winston's and recommend that his vet takes another look at him.
