Customer Question

My dog is a 15 year old staffy-cross, who was diagnosed by our vet about a month ago with mild pancreatitis, and advised a low fat diet, which we've put him on, buying a proprietary low fat pate style food. I just noticed he passed a yellowy-orange solid stool, please what does this indicate?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with your wee one today.

If you have just changed diets, then this likely either the result of his digessting its ingredients and/or a sign that there is a low grade disturbance to his normal gut microflora (good gut bacteria). As long as the stools are formed, we'd not be overly worried here but I would suggest a dog specific probiotic (ie Fortiflora, Protexin Enterogenic, etc) would be ideal here to support digestion and the microflora. These can be purchased OTC at most vets, pet stores and even online (ie Amazon). But again with normal consistency, this stool color wouldn't be a significant concern for Harvey.

I hope this information is helpful.
