Don't hesitate to have a coughing 12 year old's chest auscultated (listened to) by his vet who is also likely to recommend chest X-rays. While any age dog can contract a simple respiratory infection such as infectious tracheobronchitis (kennel cough), our elderly dogs are most likely to cough secondary to advanced cardiopulmonary disease - congestive heart failure and chronic sterile bronchitis, e.g. After 43+ years of practice, I've learned not to be cavalier with these dogs. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
