Customer Question

my dog ate ponstan
7 tablets were gone from the packet when I got home 2hrs later. I took her to the vet and she only threw up yellow liquid (after hed injected her with something to make her throw up, and then another needle after to quieten her down).

Hello. Ponstan (Mefenamic acid) is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). These can cause GI ulcers, kidney toxicity and liver toxicity. The treatment of choice is to induce vomiting, give activated charcoal and then place the dog on IV fluids for 24-48 hours to protect the kidneys. I usually check bloodwork in the beginning and then again at 24 hours. If normal, I'll send them home. If elevated, I'll go another 24 hours. Most dogs have a full recovery with this treatment plan. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
