I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. While the toxicity of chloramphenicol in humans has been greatly discussed, the drug is generally considered to have a low order of toxicity in adult companion animals when appropriately dosed. However, a recent retrospective review found that 53% of 51 dogs treated with chloramphenicol at usual dosages (approx. 50 mg/kg = 22.7 mg/lb) developed adverse effects that included GI signs, lethargy, shaking, and increased liver enzymes. Anemia, panting, and aggression were reported in individual dogs. Development of aplastic anemia reported in humans, does not appear to be a significant problem for veterinary patients; however, a dose-related bone marrow suppression (reversible) is seen in all species, primarily with long-term therapy. Other adverse effects that may be noted include anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and depression. Can you please tell me which symptoms Roxy has demonstrated? Do you know what dose and for how long that dose was administered?

I'm just following up on our conversation about Roxy. How is everything going?
