Customer Question

My dog was vomiting 3 days ago, so I started him on a bland diet. His appetite is good, but he's not drinking very much water. I usually walk him everyday, but since he's been sick I haven't been walking him, so he isn't very active right now. How much water should he have a day? He's an 80lbs Pit Bull.

Hello, I'm Dr. Deb. I will do my best to assist you today.
Hopefully, your dog is no longer nauseous which I assume is the case since he's eating.
The fluid requirements for a healthy dog would be one ounce of water per pound in a 24 hour period. That means that he would need about 80 ounces/day or 10 cups. If he's eating canned food, he may not require quite as much since wet food contains more water, obviously, than dry.
I'll sometimes advise owners to offer Pedialyte since it can replace electrolytes lost when gastrointestinal issues are present although I know that some dogs don't particularly like the taste. Low sodium chicken broth is another option.
I hope this helps. Deb
