Hello, I'm Dr Gary. I've been practicing veterinary medicine since 2007. I look forward to helping with your questions/ concerns.
Metronidazole is used for diarrhea, colitis (inflammation of the colon) and other bugs in the GI tract. It's very safe and effective for these conditions in dogs. It sounds like your dog may have some colitis, which would explain the straining.
The dose you would give a 20 lb dog, is 1/2 of a 250 mg tablet twice daily for 5-7 days.
I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
