I have a very lazy basset /dachshund mix. He sleeps all day; but otherwise he seems very happy. We adopted him and aren't sure how old he is. We walk him daily. I'm just concerned of him sleeping so much. It isn't normal ... or is it?
Hello, I'm Dr Gary. I've been practicing veterinary medicine since 2007. I look forward to helping with your questions/ concerns.

It's not uncommon for dogs to sleep up to 16 hours a day normally. This is common with most breeds. I don't know how much your dog is sleeping, but it's most likely normal.

If you want to rule out metabolic disease or hypothyroidism, you could get some bloodwork done. It's good to run screening bloodwork once yearly anyways, so I would have that done. If normal, then you can have some peace of mind about his sleeping habits.

Hi Natalie,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Fogel. How is everything going?
