Hi My Golden Retriever died yesterday night. My parents found her in their room
laying down, she was surrounded with her poop on the floor next to her. My
mother thought she was dehydrated from the heat, my mom then took her outside
and fed her cold water and rinsed her down with water. But she hardly drank
water and when my mother rinsed her down, my dog did not shake of the water of
her fur, which i thought was strange since she always shake her self dry. My dog
was very weak and could not stand on her own. so my mom then dried her off, as
my mom dried her off my dog twitched twice. after words we hear my dog cry loud,
but a cry that we never heard from her, then our neighbors dogs started to bark
and howl so loud and would not stop. About 10 dogs in total from the block were
all howling at the same time right after my dog had finished crying. After that
she took deep breaths and threw up and died. we also noticed that blood had
leaked out of her anus. We are shocked of her death because yesterday morning
she was fine and then at the end of the day she just died. my brother recalls
that the dog kept moving from one spot to another in a triangle rotation and
would not stay still. I am very shocked of her death it was painful to watch but
what is more painful is that we do not know what could have caused her death. I
am frustrated to know her cause of death, could you Possibly help me find an
explanation for her death.

Was an autopsy done?

Customer:

So she is buried, and an autopsy will not be done?

Customer:

Yes she is Buried.

RebeccaVet :

An autopsy might be the best way to tell why she died, but sometimes even an
autopsy just leaves you with no answers.

Customer:

DO you have any guess what could have been the cause. I did not mention she had
just giving birth to 6 puppy 18 days ago

Customer:

For a young Golden to die, I would think of a heart condition ( there is a
condition seen in this breed called subaortic stenosis that could cause sudden
death), or poison ( rat poison could cause bleeding like you saw from her anus).
If she just had puppies, it could be related to that, like a dead puppy still
inside her. I did once see a dog collapse 10 days after giving birth from a dead
decaying puppy still inside her.

My brother recals seeing clear tissue he said it looked like the plasenta from
when she gaved birth

That is normal. A dog usually passes a clear sac after each puppy.

Customer:

He saw this when he found her in the rood with poop around her

Customer:

Yes i Know its normal after they give birth but she gaved birth 18 days ago

So when she was found with the poop around her, there was something coming from
her vagina?

Customer:

so why would she release that now

Customer:

Yes

RebeccaVet :

If it was from her vagina, that could be a sign that the last puppy was never
born, and died inside her. After dying, and decomposing, that can cause an
internal infection that could have been the cause of death.

Customer:

I understand. does this also explains her twitching

Customer:

She twitched multiple times

RebeccaVet :

The twitching could be from the cold water, but you could see twitching with a
serous internal infection, pain, a seizure, electrolyte imbalances, many things.

RebeccaVet :

Low blood sugar could cause twitching, and low blood sugar can happen with a
serious internal infection.

RebeccaVet :

I am so sorry for this terrible sudden loss.

RebeccaVet :

I once saw a Golden that was about her age, literally drop dead, after getting a
mild sedative so we could take an Xray. That was probably a heart problem.

They are wonderful dogs, but do have a number of breed related problems.

I see. Thank you rebecca, Well I think that the answer might be a puppy dying
inside of her. Also i fergot to mention is That When she gaved birth, 3 puppys
were born from their legs first rather than their head

Being born legs first is not unusual in dogs.

Customer:

So its normal?

RebeccaVet :

If she was passing a sac from her vagina when she died, it must have been
related to her pregnancy.

RebeccaVet :

Yes, a "breech" or hind end first birth, happens often in dogs.
