My dog has a rash around her vaginal area.

This answer was rated:

My dog has a rash around her vaginal area. It's red and looks almost like a scab with one bump. It's not bothering her at all but I'm concerned. Any idea of what it could be and what to try to treat it with?

Welcome to Just Answer! I'm Dr. Hinson and I'd like to help you with your question.

Dr. Hinson :

It is really hard to say what it is or why she got this - especially since I can't see her. That being said though, it probably is a minor rash. It is good that it isn't bothering her.

Dr. Hinson :

Have you noticed her licking it?

Customer:

not yet

Customer:

It doesn't seem to be bothering her at all.

Dr. Hinson :

Any issues with urination?

Customer:

Not that I've seen

Customer:

Energy level is still good

Dr. Hinson :

You can approach this a couple different ways. If it isn't bothering her you can do nothing and just monitor it. If it doesn't get better in a 4-5 days then you can treat it with a mild topical medication

Dr. Hinson :

like hydrocortisone

Customer:

That was my thought as well. The hydrocortisone cream

Dr. Hinson :

It could be a mild heat rash which the hydrocortisone should help. If it gets worse or starts to spread you should take her to your vet as she may need an oral antibiotic.

Dr. Hinson :

I would try the hydrocortisone first personally.

Dr. Hinson :

You should stay away from a cream and use a spray. It dries better and is less messy.

Customer:

Okay

Customer:

The heat rash makes sense, we were visitng family in a warm area this past weekend

Dr. Hinson :

Any other questions?

Customer:

no, that was it.

Customer:

Thank you

Dr. Hinson :

Well I hope the hydrocortisone helps. I wish you and Hazel all the best!
