Hi there,

Welcome to Just Answer! I would like to help you and your dog with this question, but need a bit more information in order to better assist you.

1. How many minutes ago did she ingest it?

2. How much does she weigh?
3. Do you have any hydrogen peroxide in the house?

She took it about an hour and a half ago. She weighs 35-40 pounds. She is a 11 year old Beagle. She got real hyper at first and now she is calming down. I do not have any peroxide, but can get some at a store 2 minutes away.

Ahh.... if it has been 1.5 hours, then it is a bit late to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. So don't worry about that. For future reference, if she eats something like this again, you can make a dog vomit with peroxide. Always check with a vet first!

With Ambien (zolpidem) what we see in dogs is mild sedation at around 0.2 mg/kg and paradoxical signs of hyperactivity and hyper-sensitivity at around 0.6 mg/kg.

**To date**, we haven't seen deaths.

Your dog may have received a dose of 3 mg/kg! So, at that dose, I would be concerned about agitation, wobbliness, hyper-sensitivity and hyperactivity. There is no specific antidote. However, your veterinarian can give either acepromazine or cyproheptadine to counteract the effects until this passes through her system. If your dog develops worse symptoms, I would recommend a visit to your vet so she can be treated for this. Also, you may want to consider taking her to your vet so they can give a medication to counteract the effects of the Ambien.

I hope that your dog feels much better soon!

So if she is calming down now, is this okay? If she falls asleep, will she wake up?

She is sleeping now. Is that okay?

Dog Specialist: Dr.Fiona, Dog Veterinarian replied 8 years ago

Molly had a large dose of Ambien (zolpidem). It sounds like she has gone through the "hyperactive" stage and is now on to the sedated stage. It is likely that she will sleep this off over the next 12 hours, BUT I cannot promise that she will be ok. I *think* she will be ok, but if she has a underlying heart, kidney or liver disease then she may be in danger.

Keep an eye on her breathing rate. She should be taking about 12 to 30 breaths per minute. If it is higher or lower than that, then definitely see your vet.
If she is over-heating, then see your vet (anything above 102.5 would make me begin to be concerned).
Instructions here on how to check her temperature: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/how-to-take-your-dog-s-temperature/page1.aspx

I hope that helps!
