My dog has not eaten...
My dog has not eaten since Wed PM. Thurs she threw us several times and had diarerrea. I took her to the vet on Fri. they took a stool sample, treated her with anitbiotics and gave her sub Q liquids. We have amoxicillian 100 mg to give her every 12 hours. Sat AM she was not much better, still not eating. Took her back the vet, they did blood work - reuslts not back till Mon - gave her another antibiotic shot and sub Q liquids. Through the day she did drink SMALL amounts of water but no food, not even plain boiled white rice. LAst night she threw up green - like grass green - fluid. This morning she is still not eating, but she does follow me - very slowly - when I move from one room to another. What does all this mean?

Pepper is an 8 year old Schipperke. This is the first time she has been sick in the 6+ years we have had her.

She ate dinner Wednesday evening.

Up to date on shots and had a follow up heartworm screening last month.

I did give her Comfortis on Sunday but she has not reacted to it since we started using it in March of this year.

A holistic vet suggested that I suppliment my dogs food with flax seed oil - they have been getting about 1 Tbsp per day for the last 6 weeks.

That is all I can think of .

Dear friend,

I am sorry Ginger is not feeling well.

Green vomit is bile and means her tummy is empty.

You can give her a half a pepsid to relieve nausea.

http://www.walkervalleyvet.com/otc-meds.htm

For vomiting withhold food for two hours. Then give a quarter of a pepsid:

http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/famotidine-pepcid/page1.aspx
http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/ranitidine-hcl-zantac/page1.aspx

Diarrhea is caused by parasites or GI upsets or stress:

http://www.beaglesunlimited.com/beaglehealth_giardiasis.htm

Your baby can have Immodium or kayopectate:

Kaopectate at 1 teaspoon per 5 pound every 2 - 6 hours or Immodium at 1 mg per 15 pounds one or two times a day can be given for diarrhea.

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0+1459&aid=1432

I would pick up any dog food.Try a small amount of boiled chicken with all fat drained off, chop meat , or baby food (with no onion), beef, turkey, etc add cooked white rice or infant rice cereal.

Go very slow so she does not throw it up.

Dogs get dehydrated and hypoglycemic very easily from diarrhea.

Add unflavored pedialyte to her water 50/50 to hydrate her and balance her electrolytes.

Put a few drops of pancake syrup on her tongue to raise her blood sugar in case she is a bit hypoglycemic. That should perk her up.

Do not allow her to drink a lot at a time if she throws up water, she can lick ice

Keep her on that very light diet of boiled chicken or baby food for 48 hours after the stool is normal.

Also give her one teaspoon a day of plain yogurt to keep "good" bacteria in her system.

If she develops any abdominal pain, bloating, constipation or cannot keep anything down she needs to be seen by a vet.

Please let me know how she is doing. I will always be here for you

I hope your baby feels better very soon..

Best wishes for her,

Terri

Well - she is taking the pedialite/water from a straw and I have given her about 1/3 small jar of chicken baby food to her - but - she just threw up again, so she is not improving much at all. I will call the vet in the morning, I don't feel that she is in immediate danger, just needs more treatment.

Thank you for getting us through Sunday!

OK give her very little food so she does not keep throwing up. But continue with the fluids.
