Hello,

This sounds like a gastric reflux type problem. I'm glad you tried the x-rays and different foods. The one thing I would do is put her on daily Pepcid (Famotidine). This can help a lot with gastric reflux diseases in people as well as dogs. The dose is 0.25 mg per lb every 12-24 hours as needed.

If still no help, then I would consider scoping the upper GI tract or going in surgically to get biopsy samples to rule out IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), intestinal or gastric cancers.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

from other research i've done, people seem to be having good results with acidophilus and digestive enzymes to treat similar problems. again, shes had full bloodwork done, fecal analysis, the works. she kept down the canned version of the food just fine and had returned to her normal "self" until we changed it to the dry food variant. i was wondering if that points to her just having a difficult time digesting solid dogfood. i also compared the ingredients between the canned version and the dry version, and it seems the only difference was that the dry version listed chicken and the canned did not. are her symptoms synonymous with a food allergy to chicken?

The one thing to make sure of is that her esophagus is not affected- if they haven't done chest x-rays, then get those done. Sometimes we only do abdominal x-rays and miss the problem with the esophagus in the chest.

Acidophilus and digestive enzymes can be used for pancreatic disease (EPI- exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) but that would be ruled out with the GI panel bloodwork.

It may be a food allergy to chicken- a good way to find out would be to do allergy testing on her. Food allergy is common in dogs causing IBD. We can treat by avoiding the offending protein or just putting them on a hypoallergenic diet like Hill's Z/D or Purina HA.
