Customer Question
My 67lb Walking coon hound...
My 67lb Walking coon hound ate about 12 candy bars. Butterfingers, babe ruths, crunch bars, 100 grand bars. She did this 13 hours ago and after she did it she started throwing up large amounts within the first 1.5 hours. It seemed she threw up everything she ate and then went on a drinking spree. She has been lazy (normally is) the rest of the time. She seems weak I figured from how many times she threw up. I am extremely worried however and do not have the $ to take her to the vet. If need be I will in the morning, but cannot pay for emergency vet this evening. How long does it take to pass through her system and what should I be watching for?

Hello,

If it was 13 hours ago, then she should be ok. Usually the severe signs will be seen earlier. The couple things you can do from home would be: give a GI protectant like Pepcid (Famotidine)- 0.25 mg per lb every 12-24 hours. You can also make sure she's drinking well as chocolate is a potent diuretic. Get her outside to urinate every 2-3 hours as chocolate can get re-absorbed over the bladder wall.

Chocolate usually passes within 24 hours, although we can see delayed signs up to 72 hours (3 days) out. Diarrhea should be expected in the next 12-24 hours if it's not present already.

If muscle tremors, seizures or passing out, then I would be more worried and that would require emergency medical treatment.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
