I have a 13 year old Golden Retriever. He has lost weight and is very unstable. A couple of weeks ago I observed a couple of sores under his skin that I attempted to treat with antiseptic. However, tonight I relaized that they have grown and more have developed. In addition he now appears to have some sort of infection in both eyes. What can be the problem and how do I treat?

Hello,

What do the skin lesions look like?
Are the eyes cloudy looking or is there discharge?
Is he still eating/ drinking ok?

The lesions look like scabs and are hard to the touch. He still eats but his appetitie is not like it use to be. There is a light green discharge that formed in one eye at first and now both eyes. He seems alert at times and other times as if he cannot hear or at the very least does not respond.

Ok thanks,

I would definitely get the skin lesions checked- either a needle aspirate, impression smear or even remove to biopsy. If we're seeing inflammatory cells, then they're likely just infectious lesions. If abnormal cells, then it could be a type of cancer. Malignant histiocytosis, Hemangiosarcoma and cutaneous lymphoma are all common skin cancers in dogs. This could also account for the weight loss and decreasing appetite.

I would also recommend screening geriatric bloodwork to rule out metabolic disease like kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes and others.

As for the eyes, if it's just conjunctivitis then topical steroids will help. The other worry I have is that it's inflammation behind the cornea (uveitis) that we can see with some systemic diseases/ cancers like lymphoma. A good magnified ocular exam and taking pressures (tonometry) will help as uveitis leads to a low intra-ocular pressure. The one thing you could give for conjunctivitis at home is Benadryl at 1 mg per lb every 6-8 hours.

Hopefully this is just infectious and a course of antibiotics should do the trick. Given his age and multiple signs, I'm worried there may be something more sinister going on.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
