This may sound like an odd question but I am really seeking the answer. When humans eat ice cream or frozen items too quickly they get a nasty headache. So if I feed my dogs frozen dog yogurt, if they eat it too quickly will they have the same reaction, and if so how would anyone ever know????

HiCustomer

That's actually a really good question...but to give a guess about the answer, we'd first have to look at why humans get ice cream headaches (or brain freezes, as my nephews call them).

Although no one really truly knows why these headaches happen, one theory suggests that the cold food or drink may temporarily alter blood flow to the brain, causing a brief headache. On the other hand, some researchers suspect that the pain is referred from your mouth to your head via the trigeminal nerve, which delivers sensory information from the face and mouth to the brain.

Since dogs do have a trigeminal nerve like humans that functions the same as humans, then it's possible that if eaten too quickly a dog could, in theory, get an ice cream headache just like you or me.

As to how you'd know...well, dogs aren't great at hiding pain most of the time...so I suspect if the dog got an ice cream headache from the frozen yogurt, you'd probably see them move away from the bowl, possibly shiver or shake (as these are signs of pain or discomfort in dogs) or even vocalize or try to rub their faces on the carpet (because my ice cream headache always happens between my eyes, so I suspect a dog's would too).

Luckily ice cream headaches rarely last more than a minute or so, so even if your dogs got one, it would be gone as quickly as it appeared.

I hope this helps.
