My English Bulldog is making weird snorting noises like he

Resolved Question:

My English Bulldog is making weird snorting noises like he is having a hard time catching his breath. Now his nose is runny. It looks like when I have a sinus infection, kind of yellowish. He is not a rough & playful as normal so I can tell he is not feeling great. Our vet was booked until Saturday. Is there anything I can do until then to make him feel better? I know that when he had an eye problem my vet suggested Children's Benadryl...

It sounds like your dog might have either kennel cough

or canine influenza

Both of these are very easily picked up from another dog.

If you think this is it you can see if some Robitussin DM will help the dog breathe better and control any cough or sneezing or runny nose. Read here about cautions and dose info here

You can see and hear a dog with kennel cough here

If you see a colored discharge from nose or eyes, if your dog coughs stuff up, seems lethargic, has any real trouble with breathing, or goes off eating, see your vet as your pet may have a secondary bacterial infection that will need antibiotics or other meds.

Hope this helps you!

Hi Nancy, sorry it took me awhile to accept your answer, I had to go back to work. Winston is playful & is eating, just not as much as normal. When he does his normal bulldog snuffly noises the snot comes out of his nose. The noise he is making is kind of like when a human tries to "spit out a haughker". It looks painful like he cant catch his breath. He does this sound maybe about every hour, about 3 times in a row everytime...

As the discharge is colored I'd worry about infection.

But this breed (among many others) can do a reverse sneezing action and you can read about this and some other issues here

Thanks for the above accept!
