what can I do when my dog has a toothache and there is no vet in the area

Resolved Question:

My American Eski mo dog has redness around one of her teeth and it seems as though it is bothering her. I have given her 1/4 of an aspirin - what else can I do? I live in rural Alaska and the monthly vet visit is a week away. To leave my area to find a vet, I would need to fly to Fairbanks. Please advise as to what I can do to relieve her discomfort? Thank you.

Is your dog showing any other problems at this time?

How much does your dog weigh?

Is she on any other medications?

How long has this been going on?

Is your dog still eating and drinking well?

She seems to be drinking, but I have been at work all morning. She ate a salmon treat and enthusiastically ate a piece of cheese wrapped around the aspirin.

You can safely give your dog 1/4 to 1/2 a buffered aspirin (adult aspirin is 325mg) once to twice a day. Just make sure she continues to eat and drink well. You do not want to spoil her with rich or unusual foods but if you need to feed her softer items until the veterinarian arrives in your area go ahead.

There are some antibiotics that can be used but I would hold off since you will see a veterinarian in a week.

If I can answer anything else please let me know.

Can you prescribe antibiotics if she worstens?
Expert:  Dr. Margo replied 8 years ago.

That is something that I am not allowed to do by law. But I would bet the veterinarian that travels into your area may be allowed to do that. I do not have a license to practice in Alaska. Only Pennsylvania.
