I am so sorry to hear about your dog ...
Well first of all I can tell you what this wasn't, I cannot see any connection between the symptoms you described and the prednisolone or the degenerative disk disease.
As you say you would need an autopsy to really know, but I do not blame you for not having one because even as a vet I would not want my own pet cut about after it had died.
The symptoms you have described like the sudden onset, the gasping for air and the blue colour of the mucous membranes in the mouth which indicate circulatory collapse would be consistent with heart failure.
There is another possibility dogs of his breed are prone to a disease called bloat or gastric torsion, they would be foaming at the mouth, would be gasping for air, and quickly die of shock. With bloat the abdomen becomes greatly distended and that would be very obvious.
