What happens when a dog eats cough drops

Customer Question

I left my 4 1/2 month old 1.2 black lab 1/2 border collie alone at home for about 45minutes. i returned home to see that she got into a pack of cepacol cough drops and ate half a pack, so about 8-10. I dont have a car to take her to the vet, my neighbour suggested using salt down the back of her throat to make her puke, so ive been doing that. is there anything else that can be done? will she be okay?

Hi helenas,

If there was any zinc in the ingredients then that would be you toxic to the dog. From what I am reading, if I have the same brand you have , then making the dog vomit would be all that is needed. I do not see anything in here that would be toxic. Since you have made the dog vomit you may also want to give some very burnt toast to the dog to absorb anything left in the stomach. You may see vomiting, or diarrhea. Keep the dog well hydrated with 1/2 water and 1/2 children's pedialyte.

If there is suddenly a lack of appetite, stumbling or staggering, breathing difficulty or lethargy then you should have the dog seen.
