Little black bugs in puppys stool

Resolved Question:

Our new puppy's stool seems to be normal, maybe a little loose, when he goes. But later, when I go to pick it up in the yard, I find little black beetle like bugs in it. I haven't seen them in the our other dogs stool (hers is a little harder) so I am not sure if they are coming from the yard or the dog. His appitite and energy seem fine. Any help?

These gross litte creatures are called dung beetles as you can see here:

The diarrhea can be from worms , the food, stress, or the protozoan parasite Giardia or it's cousin coccidia and may be responsible for your babys issues. These parasites run rampant in kennels and shelters Most pups are born with them.No matter how clean the breeder seems.

Metronidazole (flagyl) is scripted for these parasites. It must be given for ten straight days - the off a week and repeat another ten days. That is because the parasites shed cysts (eggs) that do not mature in a week hence the dog keeps becoming reinfected.

Because of this lack of shedding into every stool, three separate tests are required to rule it out or consider it cured.

As a small pup he can get dehydrated and hypoglycemic from so much diarrhea.

Put a drop of pancake syrup on his tongue to raise his blood sugar.

In addition, he needs acidophilus to replace the good bacteria in his colon so give him one teaspoon of yogurt every day.If that is not strong enough, get acidopius for dogs at a human heath food store.

You can also add white rice or baby rice cereal to his food.

Please let me know if you still have questions and how your baby is doing. I will always be here for both of you.
