Why do dogs kick their back legs out

while on a walk my english bulldog kicks his back legs out after he goes to the bathroom.

This is a marking behavior to indicate he is a 'tough guy' who has pottied there.
Its similar to a bear clawing on a tree or a cat scratching a tree. Its a disturbance of the ground so the urine or stool is not missed by another animal passing by.
