Why does my dog eat ashes

This answer was rated:

My dog is 1/2 labrador and 1/2 border collie and 1 year old. He loves to get to the fireplace and chew on the small chunks of ash wood that are in the fireplace.

What brand of dog food is he eating?

Any vomitng?

Any diarrhea?

Does he like to eat grass?

He is on Pedigree Puppy Chow. I haven't switched him yet as he just turned 1 year last week.

No he is not vomiting, nor does he have diarrhea.

He is not eating grass either.

Good. It sound like he is just being a Lab puppy...getting into things he shouldn't. He mayalso be attracted to something in the fireplace. You can try cleaning out the fire place and/or get a screen for the fireplace to help stop the beahvior. Otherwise he should outgrow it.

Also, I think you can switch him to adult version of his current diet.

I hope this helps. If not I am available for follow up questions.
