Is it safe to leave a dog alone at home overnight

Resolved Question:

Is it against the law to leave a dog at home alone overnight?

Its not against the law as long as the dog has food, water, shelter and is being kept in healthy surroundings. Many people who need to go away have a pet sitter come in and care for the pets who stay home.
It might be fine to leave the dog home sleeping overnight but there is always potential the dog could get into something, or bark and cry from being lonesome. It will of course need its usual food and walk times accomodated too.
While a single night might not be a problem leaving any animal with out care for more than that might be construed in some areas as cruelty.
