If the dog is constantly licking the new carpet, YES it can make the dog sick!!
New carpet sheds a lot of fuzz.. this can become like a hairball in the stomach or intestines and cause lots of problems (loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea). It can also irritate the throat (cough). You can:
1) keep dog in another room until carpet is worn in... vacuum a LOT!! (several weeks to months)
2) basket or mesh muzzle to prevent ingestion
3) crate dog when you are not home.
Also consider other reasons why your dog may be sick. Feeding plain white rice (only) for diarrhea helps. Regards,
