why is my dog shedding so much

Customer Question

My dog has been shedding a lot. Just running my hand across her back casues a lot of hair to come out. I put a little olive oil in her food about 3 times per month, and brush her at least once per week. She is 13 months old.

You may be seeing extra shedding for a few different reasons. She might have a flea allergy or if you use flea prevention the type you use may be mildly irritating to her. She is also at the age where some dogs change from puppy coats to adult coats which causes an extra shedding period.
Stress can make dogs shed so if there have been changes in her routine that could be it.
Normal shedding is controlled by the amount of light a dog gets per day so if you have been staying up later than usual that too could trigger shedding.
She could potentially be having a problem with her thyroid (if this is a labrador for example thats a known issue with that breed) or she might be reacting to some component in her food as dogs can develop food allergies.
You can read about food allergies here
and if you try changing her diet make sure to use one with different grain and protein sources. Many find California Natural, Blue Buffalo, Evo, Wellness Fish and Potato from the pet supply store or Canidae (see for dealers) helps their dog's coats a lot.
Hope this helps you!
