Customer Question
My cats purr has...

My cats purr has suddenly deepened she is 23 and still really healthy apart from thyroid problems causing her to be skinny

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Purr?

She has always had a light friendly purr but when I woke up I noticed that now it's a lot deeper and sounds like she might have shortness of breath

Is she on any medication for her thyroid issues?

No

Has she had blood work done to diagnose her thyroid problem?

Ask Your Own Cat Question
Cat Vet: Richard Rawling,

My concern if you have seen a change in her breathing would be a heart condition. Hyperthyroid cat`s bodies are under tremendous strain and are prone to developing heart failure. If you have noticed a recent change in her breathing pattern this can be a result of fluid accumulation on the lungs which is a common consequence of the heart beginning to struggle.

Ask Your Own Cat Question
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
Her heartbeat has sped up not a huge amount but a noticeable difference and her purrs and meows are shorter like she has trouble catching her breath
Customer reply replied 1 year ago
I could take a recording of her purr to send to you if it would help
Cat Vet: Richard Rawling,
 replied 1 year ago

She may be developing heart disease, I would recommend getting her checked over by your vet. She ideally needs to have her heart and chest listened to to assess things further. She may need medication to manage her heart condition and treating the thyroid problem may be a good way to take the strain off her heart a little.

The vet said that the information and my following it will be what made the difference. Thanks again for being so very helpful.

TracyGrayson, LA

My oldest male cat had a seizure this evening. This site was the first place I could think of to go after the seizure had passed. Dr. Lucy was fantastic and she was spot on!

DebbieUSA

I must tell you I found this site by accident and was amazed when I asked a question of the Veteranians online. I wish I could have found it sooner it could have made such a difference in the outcome of my pet's surgery. However, I am passing along the information to my sister-in-law (a cat-rescue person who is also a nurse), and perhaps it will help someone else who may experience the same problem. The doctor who answered my question was amazing, and while it didn't come it time to change the outcome of my situation, it is reassuring to know the caliber of Vets/Doctors that you have at JustAnswer. Thank you for being there.
