Customer Question

He has been sneezing a lot for a couple days and seems to be congested with heavy clear secretions. My vet prescribed azithromycin, 1 1/2 cc per day (administered with an eye dropper. So far, that has not seemed to have provided much relief. Is there something else I can try?
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the cat's name?
Customer: Moses
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Moses?
Customer: He is about 15 years old and generally healthy, except for persistent gingivitis. He was given an antibiotic shot for that about a week ago, and that seems to have helped a lot.

I m sorry Moses is not feeling well. Antibiotics help with bacterial but not viral ailments.

Add l-lysine to his water every day.

Or these:

He can also have little noses pediatric nose drops.

Make a steam room by running a hot shower to help with congestion.

Feed him odorous foods so he can easily smell it and will keep eating.

Give an antihistamine to reduce symptoms.

In addition, add one quarter of a 4 mg chlortrimeten to a tablespoon of baby food chicken or turkey with no onion or garlic.

Give it every 24 hours. It is very tiny so she will not detect it

Any of these are also acceptable:

Benadryl at a dose of 1/2 of a 25 mg tablet given twice daily or

Chlorpheniramine at a dose of 2-4 mg twice a day or

Claritin (Loratadine) at a dose of 2.5-5 mg/cat or

Zyrtec (cetirizine) 5 mg once or twice a day

It is important to ensure that the formulations used contain ONLY the antihistamine and are not combination products (e.g. Claritin-D contains pseudoephedrine, which could cause very significant adverse effects in a cat).
