Customer Question

I have two cats. Both are rescues that were recovered from the streets of Galveston Island. The male cat(Kody) is a little over a year and the female (Cookie) just hit one year old.
The absolutely adore each other and run and play most of the day (and night). They seem a great deal more interested in playing with each other than me.
I would like to have a relationship with them in which they sit next to me (or even come to me for pets and attention) and sleep with me in my bed at night.
They will lay on my bed in the afternoon and nap.
I play with them each night. I have put cat kip and treats on my bed to entice them. The female cat come lie down on the bed very early in the morning (after playing and roaming all night).
I try to speak 20 minutes a day petting them. Kody can stand about 10 minutes and then moves away. Cookie will tolerate a little bit and then go into full play mode.
I understand that come cats are just stand offish and that's it. I feel very upset that I will have them for 10 plus more years and I am just the person that feeds the

Hello,I'm sorry that you feel your cats are not as affectionate with you as you would like. At this age, they enjoy playing with each other, because the play is different and they can 'mock hunt', chase each other and engage in 'games' a human can't. Don't take it personally, they still love you and even if they don't show it all the time, they know you're the source of their food, water, etc.One way to get them to play with you, is to use interactive toys, like a feather wand or fishing pole toy. This has a stick with a toy dangling from an elastic; however, don't leave this alone with them when you're not playing with them, as pieces can be chewed off. There are many othe toys they will love, which you can throw for them and some cats will even like to 'fetch' like a dog! Here is a wonderful group of toys they will like, including a cat DVD:, keep in mind that this can't be 'forced;' the cats must come to you and/or you can get them used to petting more often by doing it several times a day just for a few minutes. As far as getting them to sleep with you, every cat is different, some like it and some don't; however, as they mature, you will see changes in them, and they might ask for more attention and even jump up on your bed at night. For now, putting a cat bed in your room for each of them, is a good start, to get them to sleep in your room. Put one of your t-shirts in each bed, so they have you familiar and comforting scent near them, when they sleep.I would also suggest feeding them a cat treat from your hand and speaking gently to them, so they always associate you with pleasurable things. You can use a Feliway plug in in your room to relax them; this emits calming pheromones only detectable to cats; it has no scent to humans. Just go to for more information.I'm sure you realize it will take some time for you to see these changes and please keep in mind that not all cats are 'lap' cat or like to be cuddled or petted all the time. Since Cookie is already coming up on your bed in the night and both cats will nap there in the afternoon, it sounds like they do like your bed, so eventually, they might sleep with you! Please be so kind as to rate my answer with positive feedback; that is the only way I receive credit for my assistance. Thank you very much!Providing a positive rating will not end our conversation, should you need me for any follow-up.
