I just noticed my male cat straining to urinate, as he is

Customer Question

Customer: Hi, I just noticed my male cat straining to urinate, as he is trying his penis is actually sticking out. He's not crying in pain or anything but I fear he could have a blockage or at the very least a urinary tract infection. The vets around here are closed & the emergency vet is very far.
JA: Thanks. Can you give me any more details about your issue?
Customer: What kind of details do you need? He is a male cat, about 3-4 years old. This is the first time I've ever seen him do this
JA: OK got it. Last thing — JustAnswer charges a fee (generally around $19) to post your type of question to Cat Experts (you only pay if satisfied). There are a couple customers ahead of you. Are you willing to wait a bit?
Customer: Yes I suppose I can wait.
JA: OK. Now I'm going to take you to a page to place a secure deposit with JustAnswer. Don't worry, this chat is saved. After that, we will finish helping you.

I am sorry this is happening. It is very serious and can even be life threatening.

How many hours till your vet opens?

How many miles away is the ER vet?

After your reply please give me a fem minutes to type detailed answer.

The vet won't be open until tomorrow morning.
The emergency vet is probably about a*****away.
He has tried to pee twice now, the second time a few spots came out that are blood-tinged.

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply.

It could be a UTI or a blockage:

There are two things you can try:

1 Fill up a sink with warm water, stand him up and immerse his lower half up to his belly.

Hold him there 20 minutes.

2 give him a tsp of cranberry juice to lower the PH of his urine and stop the burning sensation he feels.

If he can pass any urine after this he can wait for his vet.

If he cannot he must go to the ER or you could lose him.

His bladder could burst.

Please let me know what happens.

Please be so kind as to rate my answer with positive feedback; that is the only way I receive credit for my assistance. Thank you very much!
