My cat has been coughing and trying to bring up something.

Customer Question

My cat has been coughing and trying to bring up something. The vets said she didn't have a cold but she has brought up some mucus(I think) I don't know if she has fluid in her lungs. Vets said she could just have a scratched throat so she gave her some anti inflammatory. She is still!l coughing and now wheezing after coughing. What would you do?

I would X-ray the chest of such a patient. Coughing cats are most often asthmatic although we do see coughing with feline herpesvirus infections involving the larynx (laryngitis) which also often causes a loss of voice. We look for over-inflated lungfields, increased bronchovascular markings, and alveolar (patchy) densities in the lungs of asthmatic cats. A complete blood count should be performed as well. An increased number of the white blood cell eosinophil will support the diagnosis of asthma.
