Over the last 3-4 days my 6yo cat has started losing control

Customer Question

Over the last 3-4 days my 6yo cat has started losing control of his hind legs. He has total control of his tail and meows or hisses when you mess with his lower back or hind legs. What could cause this?

Thanks so much for requesting me.
I am sorry your boy is not feeling well.
Do his legs feel cold?
as he been outside? Could he have been injured?
Has he had a recent ear infection?
Is he able to urinate and defecate?
After your reply please give me a few minutes to type detailed answer or if you prefer we can speak on the phone

His legs are warm and as far as I know he hasn't been injured. Not sure about an ear infection but he did get out of the house for a day in a half. I haven't seen him use his box.

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply. I am concerned because he could have hurt himself outside or he could have a urinary problem.
Feel all over his legs and back for any pain response.
Pinch his toes under and see if he can pull them back.
He may have a back or neck injury to a disc or vertebra.
He may be constipated or unable to urinate.
He may have an ear infection causing a vestibular disorder:
If his legs are worm we can rule out a blood clot.
Please check everything I mentioned and let me know what you find.
I will stand by to hear from you.
I hope its nothing but a sprain and he will be fine.

He is able to pull his toes back. He hisses and bites me when I mash on his stomach. His stomach does seem to be distended. He did pee in the box this morning. He seems angry he can't walk.

Hi Tracey,
Thanks so much for your very helpful reply.I don't want to alarm you but I am very concerned about your boy.
Hissing and biting at you are symptoms of pain. Something is hurting him.
Since he was outside, he could have been it by a car, fallen, been kicked by an evil human or ingested a toxin.
I would take him to an ER vet right away.
I do have coupons for a free visit if one of these are near you and they ARE open Sundays:
here are two Vets that offer a free first visit:
Please let me know what is found and how he is doing.
