My cat has been making that hacking noise that cats make when

Resolved Question:

My cat has been making that hacking noise that cats make when they are trying to cough up a hairball. He sometimes will vomit up a little bit of food and now he is not eating. He is acting normally. Should I be concerned enough to take him to the emergency veterinarian?

CriticalCareVet :

Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and would be glad to help!

CriticalCareVet :

How often does this happen?

Customer:

It has never happened before, but it the vomiting has been happening all week...just today he decided not to eat.

CriticalCareVet :

How often is the vomiting?

Customer:

I am not home all day, but based on what I find when I get home from work, a couple times a day. Sometimes he just hacks and hacks but nothing comes up.

CriticalCareVet :

Yes - most certainly with this history - she needs to see the veterinarian. We need to make sure with the loss of appetite and this vomiting that this is nothing more than stomach upset, ruling out causes such as a blockage with x-rays.

Customer:

I am concerned its a hairball. Could that be the problem and if so, how will they help him get rid of it?

CriticalCareVet :

Yes - it is possible.

CriticalCareVet :

They will use fluids, medications for nausea.

Customer:

Should I take him tonight, or can I wait for my normal vet in the morning?

CriticalCareVet :

As soon as possible would be ideal

Customer:

Ok, thank you so much for your help.

CriticalCareVet :

Good luck!

Customer:

Thank You.
