I have not personally used licorice root extract, but I know that herbalists and holistic vets do. The following is a description of the indications for its use and the contra-indications for use in certain patients. If your cat has high blood pressure (hypertension) or for long periods of time without adding a a potassium supplement and diuretic. Like most herbal supplements, there have been no studies on whether this substance is effective. Also there is no recommended dose, so I would start very cautiously with just a drop or two to begin with.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Parts Used: root
Actions: expectorant, alterative, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, adrenal agent, mild laxative, liver tonic
Affinities: respiratory, digestive, endocrine
Specific Uses: joint & skin inflammation, coughs, GI ulcer, Addison's disease. Protects liver from toxins.
Preparation: tincture/extract
Alternative herbs: yucca, alfalfa
Cautions and Comments: not recommended for those with high blood pressure which is due to water retention, and for long-term use a potassium supplement and diuretic (such as Dandelion leaf) should be added.
